SARR offers Vacation Bird School (VBS) July 8-12, 2019. VBS is a five-day bird study environmental education experience for rising 5th-7th grade students during their summer vacation, exploring the bird world high in the fresh, cool mountains of western North Carolina. Students from Madison, Yancey and Buncombe counties, NC and beyond will take part in daily expeditions into the Big Bald Mountain habitat via the Appalachian Trail to explore the natural history and habitat of bird communities. Activities include birding, bird banding, nest searching, data collection and study to help identify and understand the bird ecology of the Southern Appalachian mountains. Students will also enjoy bird readings, bird games, creative writing, applied arts and green craft projects with an environmental focus that nurtures the learning of young outdoor naturalists.
Vacation Bird School 2019 is July 8-12, 2019, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuition donation is $250 on a sliding scale. Our base camp for the week is located in the Wolf Laurel community of Madison Co., NC. Pick-up and drop-off in Mars Hill will be provided for students traveling from outer areas. Scholarship funds are available to families in need of financial support, with priority given to Yancey and Madison Co. residents.
