Southern
Appalachian
Raptor
Research
(SARR)
is
conducting
the second season of MAPS at Big Bald Banding
Station on the Cherokee National Forest. In addition, SARR has opened a
MAPS

Preserve in
Macon County, NC. The MAPS program at Tessentee will serve
as a pilot bird monitoring and education program for Land Trust for the

conservation organization in
the upper Little
Tennessee River
valley.
SARR
receives support for the MAPS programs from the Appalachian Trail
Conservancy, Coweeta LTER,
the U.S. Forest Service, and private donations.

MAPS
(Monitoring
Avian
Productivity
and Survivorship) is a nationwide
program
coordinated by the Institute for
Bird Populations to monitor
productivity,
survivorship, and population trends of breeding birds throughout North
America. To view the 2010 MAPS banding data for Big Bald and
Tessentee, please click here.
MAPS is a volunteer
program that includes many duties such as setting up nets,
picking and banding birds, birding surveys, vegetation surveys,
paperwork and data management. Data samples are taken once
every ten days during late spring and summer. The MAPS banding day
is
from sunrise to ~noon (6 hrs). If you have an
interest in joining us for any of the sessions this summer, please email us. Volunteers and
visitors are welcome to attend and contribute in any way possible,
no matter their experience level.
Please check the website periodically for any changes to the schedule.
