FUNDING
Big
Bald Banding
Station (BBBS) is operated entirely by volunteers, in cooperation with
the
U.S. Forest Service, Cherokee National
Forest, Pisgah National Forest, Tennessee
Wildlife Resources Agency, North
Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, U.S.
Bird
Banding Lab, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, The Tennessee
Ornithological Society, and Southern Appalachian
Raptor
Research.

We
rely on and appreciate the
generous
support we receive from private donors, grants,
and
volunteers. Recently we were awarded two
grants from The Tennessee Ornithological Society and the
North Carolina Appalachian Trail License Plate Grant Program. Funding
provided
through these two grants will allow us to monitor the Northern Saw-whet
Owl
population, habitat and breeding at Big Bald, and to implement a bird
education
program.
Donations
for
BBBS
can be directed to Southern
Appalachian Raptor Research (SARR), a non-profit 501.3(c)
organization. SARR accepts donations in many forms including:
- housing
for
volunteers
- food
and equipment donations
- discounts
from
local
businesses
- money
for operating expenses, travel to
education programs, and basic equipment replacement such as nets,
traps,
and bird bags.
Funds or
services donated to the SARR program are
tax
deductible. Click
here to contact SARR for more
ideas
and suggestions regarding donation opportunities.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
|
|
|

|
In
an effort to expand learning
opportunities for current and future volunteers, we conduct training
sessions during off-peak days in both September and October.
Workshops involve informal hands-on instruction in the skills that
can help you become a member of the Big Bald crew, such as data entry,
bird extraction, bird transport, bird handling
and identification, aging and sexing of those 'confusing fall warblers'
and hawkwatch observation. Please contact us
if you are
interested in
participating.
